What happens at a sensory development class?
At The Sensory Sessions, we run our award-winning sensory development classes across venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow. These classes are specially designed to support your baby’s development through playful, purposeful activities — and to give you inspiration and confidence to continue the fun at home.
We’d love to tell you more about what happens in our sessions, and welcome you and your little one along to play!
Our sessions
Our classes are 50 minutes long — just the right amount of time for babies — and are split into two sections: a led play session and an exploratory play session.
When you arrive, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your class leader, who will help you settle in on a mat and explain the format, the theme for the day, and timings.
Each class is themed, so one week you might dive under the sea, the next join us for pet week, cowboy week, or a special visual development week. Every session uses a mixture of familiar toys (to build memory and practise skills) and new resources (to spark curiosity). Our curriculum has been created by baby development specialists who are specially trained in sensory play with babies.
We provide all the toys and resources — you just need to bring your little one, your change bag, and (if you like) a blanket for the mat.
Class format
Led Play
In the first half of the class, we lead the group through several activities together. These are paced gently to suit babies and might include:
- Activities to support body awareness and motor skills
- Visual tracking and light play
- Exploring textures, sounds, and movement
- Fine and gross motor activities designed for early development
After this active session, we take a short pause. This gives babies the opportunity to rest, feed, or be changed, and it gives you the chance to meet your baby’s needs and chat to the other parents. Pausing is so important for babies’ developing brains — it prevents overwhelm, gives them time to process what they’ve just experienced, and sets them up for more learning.
Exploratory Play
The second half of the class is dedicated to free exploration. We set up themed areas and guide you through activities you can try with your baby. These activities encourage sensory integration, as your baby combines sight, sound, touch, movement, and more while they play.
We finish the session with calming, soothing activities designed to relax your baby’s sensory system and leave them settled after their learning adventures.
Calm & relaxed
Our classes are always baby-led. You never need to worry about feeding, changing, cuddling, or moving around during a session — we are completely used to it and happy to guide you through activities at any point.
All of our equipment is cleaned between sessions, so everything is sparkling clean and ready for your baby to enjoy.
Join us for a class trial
We’d love to welcome you and your little one to a class! You’re very welcome to book a single trial session to see how our classes run. After that, you can join us for a term, book a short block of classes, or customise your booking around your return to work — we’re flexible and here to make things easy for you.
